SEM-SAFE® fire Protection installed in Samruddhi tunnel

Danfoss Fire Safety’s cutting-edge SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist fire protection system is currently installed in Maharashtra’s Samruddhi Highway Tunnel.

Through excitement, Danfoss Fire Safety announces that the Samruddhi Highway Tunnel in Maharashtra, India, now has its cutting-edge SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist fire protection system installed. This innovative concept, which aims to protect the tunnel structure and create a secure atmosphere for people to escape in the event of a fire, represents a significant improvement in infrastructure construction and fire safety technology.  An important route that connects Nagpur and Mumbai, the Samruddhi Highway acts as a spur for the state of Maharashtra’s general socioeconomic development. The Samruddhi tunnel, an 8-kilometer, 3-lane marvel located at the centre of the Mumbai-Nagpur mega project, enables travellers to safely cross the Western Ghats mountains in less than 10 minutes. It is crucial to make sure the tunnel has trustworthy fire protection. Accordingly, the active fire prevention system supplier for this project was selected to be Danfoss Fire Safety. Therefore, Danfoss Fire Safety’s SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system is installed in the tunnel.

Tunnel fires can spread quickly, endangering both human life and property. The Samruddhi tunnel has 26 cross-passages for rescue efforts and 54 ventilation fans per tube to enable optimal airflow and smoke removal in order to handle this difficulty. The SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system, a state-of-the-art tool for effectively suppressing fires and lessening their effects, is what makes this tunnel unique. “Danfoss’s dedication to innovation and safety is demonstrated by our pioneering implementation of our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system in the Samruddhi the highway Tunnel.” In order to ensure that road users can travel in peace and that the environment is preserved for future generations, we are happy to be involved in a project that is essential to Maharashtra, India’s development.”Qusai Alasad, Global Manager- Transportation Infrastructures, Danfoss Fire Safety.

“It gives me great pleasure to see our SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist fire protection system installed successfully in the Samruddhi Highway Tunnel. This accomplishment demonstrates Danfoss Fire Safety’s unwavering drive to developing innovative safety solutions and our ongoing commitment to raising infrastructure safety standards. Our significant commitment in guaranteeing the highest level of safety and dependability of our technology is demonstrated by our comprehensive fire testing at RISE in Norway, which was observed and confirmed by UL and met the SOLIT2 and NFPA502 criteria. Poul Harder, CEO of Danfoss Fire Safety, states, “With this project, we continue to lead the industry, setting new benchmarks in fire protection for tunnels worldwide.”

High-pressure water mist works wonders against fires, but it is perfectly safe for humans to use. High-pressure water mist systems effectively put out even deeply lodged or difficult-to-reach fires, according to test data. Up to seven times more cooling capacity than sprinklers is achieved by the system’s combination cooling and oxygen displacement, which also successfully inhibits re-ignition.
This creative fix takes care of the tunnel’s two tubes. Section valves, nozzles, pipes, fittings, high-pressure water mist pump units, and other components make up the SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system. The lengthy system life cycle is largely due to the energy-efficient high-pressure Danfoss pumps, sturdy system, and premium stainless-steel components. Water usage is extremely low with the SEM-SAFE® system, which is designed to satisfy client sustainability requirements. This project’s dedication to environmental preservation is in line with its sustainability-focused approach, especially considering its close proximity to the Western Ghats UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Danfoss Fire Safety additionally supplies the system and offers comprehensive technical design, engineering capabilities, and site supervision, ensuring efficient and all-encompassing project administration and support. One of the biggest infrastructure construction firms in India, Afcons Infrastructure Limited, is the contractor for the Samruddhi Tunnel. In the Samruddhi Motorway Tunnel, Danfoss Fire Safety’s SEM-SAFE® high-pressure water mist system establishes a new benchmark for fire safety. Danfoss Fire Safety is committed to providing an unmatched competitive edge through constant performance and cost-effective systems, and it does it by providing creative and efficient solutions.

A number of significant advantages provided by the SEM-SAFE® technology improve efficiency and safety in tunnel conditions. In the first place, it efficiently reduces heat radiation, cools, and manages smoke, all of which improve tenable circumstances for evacuation and make it safer for fire departments to look for victims and put out fires. In the event of smoke or fire, the system promptly kicks in, putting out the flames before they have a chance to compromise the structural integrity of the tunnel. It uses up to 80 percent less water than standard sprinklers by turning water into mist and just turning on nozzles in the affected area. This means that there is less post-cleanup work and little to no water damage.

This effectiveness results in less downtime. Furthermore, the SEM-SAFE® system reduces maintenance needs and maximises resource utilisation, making it an attractive option for a lower total cost of ownership throughout the course of its lifetime. Because of its effective fire suppression qualities, less ventilation design may be needed, which can save money and simplify infrastructure design. The SEM-SAFE® system has a long life cycle and is designed to withstand continuous operation, ensuring continued reliable operation in demanding tunnel conditions.
