Airside construction completed at Navi Mumbai airport site

The completion of airside construction at Navi Mumbai International Airport marks a significant milestone, with terminal and connectivity work nearing completion.

The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has reached a significant milestone by completing its airside construction, which includes critical components such as the runway, taxiway, apron, and associated infrastructure. Officials confirmed that this is a significant step towards operational readiness, with the remaining works—terminal building development and road connectivity—now nearing completion.

The completed airside infrastructure meets international standards and was designed to accommodate Code-F aircraft such as the Airbus A380. The 3,700-metre-long and 60-metre-wide runway, which includes dual taxiways and aircraft parking bays, is designed to handle large-scale air traffic efficiently. The taxiways have been designed to ensure quick exit and turnaround times, resulting in smoother operations.

The nodal agency for the NMIA project, CIDCO, emphasised that key civil and structural works for the terminal are progressing steadily, with final installations underway. Road connectivity improvements, such as the Sion-Panvel highway extension, link road construction, and improved public transport integration, are also being expedited to ensure seamless passenger access.

NMIA, developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), an Adani Group subsidiary, is expected to be a game changer for air traffic in western India, relieving pressure on Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Officials reiterated their commitment to completing the remaining work within the time frame specified, with the goal of being operational by the end of 2024 or early in 2025.

Once operational, NMIA will be one of India’s largest greenfield airports, increasing regional connectivity and economic development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
