ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India targets green steel by 2027

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has committed ₹2.6 lakh crore for capacity expansion, with a target of 40 MTPA, 70 percent green steel by FY2027, and job creation.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) plans to invest ₹2.6 lakh crore to increase steel production capacity and advance green steel initiatives, potentially reshaping India’s steel industry. The joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel intends to increase total capacity to 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2035.

The investment of ₹1.35 lakh crore will establish a 17.8 MTPA integrated steel plant in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. The plant will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 will include a 7.3 MTPA unit with an investment of ₹55,964 crore and is expected to be operational by January 2029. Phase 2 will add 10.5 MTPA at a cost of ₹80,000 crore, with completion scheduled for 2033.

To support this massive steel project, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved the construction of a 2.9-kilometre captive port at DL Puram. By 2029, the plant and related infrastructure are expected to generate approximately 20,000 jobs, further accelerating regional economic growth.

AM/NS India is also shifting its focus to sustainability. The company has set an ambitious goal of producing 70 percent green steel at its Hazira facility by the fiscal year 2027. In order to meet global carbon reduction targets, renewable energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, and environmentally friendly production methods will be integrated.

The expansion strategy demonstrates AM/NS India’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in India’s steel sector while advocating for the transition to sustainable industrial practices.
