ARS Steels corrosion-resistant TMT bars for high-performance and sustainability
This interaction explores how ARS Steels’ CRS TMT rebars are revolutionising the construction industry and the key features that are setting them apart from their competitors.
Can you list the key features and specifications that make your products sustainable?
Sustainability is one of our core values. We are a pioneer in manufacturing green steel in India. For the TMT rebars we produce, the carbon emission is less than 400 kg per ton of steel produced, which is the lowest by any manufacturer. Also, almost 83 percent of the energy we consume is from renewable sources, another benchmark we have achieved. Since 2018, about 99 percent of the raw material we use is recycled steel, much more than the usual 30 to 40 percent procured by other manufacturers. Our products are continuously tested and certified for quality, the BIS standard, by testing engineers from SGS Testing Services, who test our TMT at our factory 24×7.
Can you throw some light on the measures that you have adopted to reduce carbon emissions?
We use electric rather than blast furnaces, sponges, or wrought iron. Moving to electric furnaces has helped us create this benchmark. Although there are challenges associated with using them, the evolving technology of electric furnaces and our raw material sourcing expertise have helped us achieve the benchmark of low carbon emissions.
How do you balance cost and production for the end consumer?
The premium quality of steel we manufacture makes the demand for our product very high. Because of our marketing campaigns, the awareness and demand for the product are very high. So, the cost is quite high, almost 10 percent higher compared to steel produced by other manufacturers. We are the only company in India producing CRS 550D, a premium variety of corrosion-resistant steel (CRS) with the desired ductility. We offer our end consumers a fine balance of quality and cost.
Do you offer specific products for different utilities, such as residential, commercial, and industrial?
Our product can be used everywhere, from ports to highways, residential projects, and retail buildings. We have enhanced its ductility to a large extent so that it can be used in a wide variety of applications.
What strategies have you implemented to ensure CRS 550D TMT bars meet the needs of diverse regions across India?
We were the first in South India and the second in the country to develop 550D as a product in 2018. CRS as a product has been there for quite some time. But we are the first and only in India to develop 550D with CRS. We have made significant efforts to balance cost and quality so that the end users are not burdened. For TMT, the IS specification code stipulates a PPM level of less than 230 for the water used for construction. But the PPM level of the water available in the majority of our country exceeds 230, reaching even 2000 in some places. While CRS was earlier preferred only for buildings in coastal regions, awareness of the need to use CRS TMT has grown over the years and has become a required product throughout India. As the sole manufacturer of CRS 550D TMT bars, we stand apart from other steel manufacturers in catering to the needs of our customers across the country.
