Artson Group and Malabar Cements collaborate on Kerala boat manufacturing

Artson Group and Malabar Cements joined forces to develop a ₹300 crore boat manufacturing facility in Kerala, contributing to Kochi’s industrial boom.

Artson Group, a Tata Group affiliate, has formed a joint venture with Malabar Cements, a public sector entity, to manufacture boats in Kerala. The arrangement was formalised with an MoU signed at the Invest Kerala Global Summit.

The ₹ 300 crore project will involve the development of a boat manufacturing facility for vessels weighing less than 100 tonnes. Malabar Cements will lease seven acres of land from the Cochin Port Trust for the facility’s location. Artson Group had previously shown an interest in contributing to Kochi’s industrial expansion, and this agreement is a step in that direction.

According to Shashank Jha, CEO of Artson Group, and Chandra Bose, Managing Director of Malabar Cements, the production unit is expected to start operations within six months, subject to requisite government agreements. The first phase will focus on delivering boats to the Kochi Water Metro, with potential exports to Europe in the future.

Artson, founded in 1978, became a subsidiary of Tata Projects Limited in 2007. The company specialises in providing equipment, steel structures, and site services for mechanical projects in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power, and metallurgy.

Malabar Cements Limited (MCL) is a completely owned subsidiary of the Kerala government that was founded in 1978. As the state’s sole significant integrated cement plant, MCL plays a critical role in delivering factory-fresh cement to various regions of Kerala within 12 hours, ensuring minimal strength deterioration owing to moisture infiltration.

The company’s significant factory, located in Walayar, Palakkad district, has a manufacturing capacity of 6.6 lakh tonnes per year. In 2003, MCL expanded its activities by installing a 2.0 lakh tonne clinker-grinding mill in Cherthala, Alappuzha district, bringing the total installed capacity to 8.6 lakh tonnes. MCL holds ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications, demonstrating its dedication to quality and environmental management. The corporation makes important contributions to the state’s growth by providing necessary construction materials, and it has been recognised for its energy-saving efforts.
