Gaurav Kharkar designs Casa Verde apartment

Casa Verde combines nature with modern design, providing a peaceful respite from Mumbai’s rush. Gaurav Kharkar & Associates creates an oasis of calm.

In the heart of Mumbai, where towering skyscrapers compete for space and the clamour of city life never stops, there is a peaceful haven that defies its surroundings. Casa Verde, an apartment in Lalbagh Parel, is a master class in establishing a peaceful home setting despite the stress of city life. Designed by Gaurav Kharkar & Associates, this project provided a unique challenge: how to bring nature and light into a place surrounded by concrete and steel. The customers, seasoned globetrotters with a great eye for style, allowed the architects the freedom to remodel their new home. Their sole requirement? A fresh, inspiring atmosphere that would serve as a calm respite from the hectic world outside.

The moniker ‘Casa Verde’, which means ‘green home’ in both Italian and Spanish, became the project’s guiding philosophy. The team aimed to design a residence that valued a connection to light and nature throughout. This idea is reflected in the subtle yet pervasive green hues that flow throughout each room, tying the spaces together as a harmonic whole.

Upon entering the residence, one is struck by the smooth flow of spaces. The original builder’s plan was totally redesigned to meet the family’s requirements. A cleverly built hallway welcomes visitors, concealing shoe and electrical storage behind sleek panels. This attention to detail results in a clutter-free entrance, which sets the tone for the remainder of the home.
A study room on the left beckons with its striking black and white striped wallpaper, set against an English green couch – a wonderful representation of the project’s combination of drama and peace. On the right, a guest room demonstrates the firm’s ability to create minimalist yet pleasant environments, with straight lines softened by a calming colour palette.

The open-plan living and dining area is undoubtedly the home’s focal point. The design team has experimented with a variety of colours, from brilliant crimsons to subdued olives, to create a space that adjusts to the family’s moods and requirements. The semi-open kitchen is a triumph of form and function. A tuck-in sliding shutter allows the kitchen to be closed off when necessary, and a breakfast counter with exotic Brazilian granite and sea-blue mosaic tiles invites casual gatherings and spirited talks.

One of the project’s most remarkable elements is how it makes use of the apartment’s high ceilings. According to the designer, high ceilings have an amazing capacity to modify the atmosphere of any environment. This vertical expanse has been carefully handled throughout the house, increasing the sensation of space and light.

The material palette is an expertly selected array of textures and finishes that evoke both elegance and comfort. High-quality veneers offer warmth, while crisp, austere aesthetics in the modern contemporary style create a strong statement. The designers’ dedication to cohesiveness is visible in how colours and materials flow easily from one space to the next, resulting in a cohesive sense throughout the flat. The master bedroom’s affinity to nature is underlined by the use of natural materials and a muted colour scheme. It’s a luxurious and intimate room, a little hideaway within the greater sanctuary of the home.

Perhaps the most amazing quality about Casa Verde is its ability to feel both spacious and intimate. Smart technology and imaginative furniture placement utilise every square foot, while hidden storage solutions keep the area tidy and serene.

By bringing the essence of nature within and paying great attention to every detail, the firm’s proprietors, Gaurav and Vidhita, have created more than just an apartment, but a true urban refuge. In Casa Verde, the rush and bustle of Mumbai is replaced with a sense of peace and connection to nature. It’s a home that in addition provides shelter for its occupants, and uplifts and inspires them, a green jewel in this vibrant metropolis.
