Odisha gets approval for railway flyover projects
The Ministry of Railways sanctions significant flyovers in the Cuttack and Rayagada districts to improve train operations and eliminate cross-traffic delays.
The Ministry of Railways is approving ₹ 509 crore for the construction of two major railway flyovers in Odisha’s Cuttack and Rayagada districts. This effort is part of Indian Railways’ bigger Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridor Scheme, which aims to improve train operations and reduce traffic congestion on major railway lines.
The project includes the construction of a 10.89-kilometre rail flyover that will connect Rajathgarh, Radhakishorepur, and Machhapur Railway Stations in Cuttack district. This infrastructure will improve operational capabilities by allowing for simultaneous train movements without the delays imposed by cross-traffic. The overall cost of this project is ₹ 268.92 crore. A 5.50 km rail flyover will be built at Singapur Road Station in Rayagada district to alleviate traffic congestion on the Raipur-Vizianagaram Railway Line. This improvement will enable continuous train movements into and out of the station, minimising delays caused by cross-traffic. The projected cost of this project is ₹ 239.83 crores.
The new flyovers will allow trains to move in various directions at the same time, boosting the efficiency of regional train operations. The flyovers would address present operating issues by removing cross-traffic, which causes substantial delays and inefficiency at critical junctions such as Singapur Road Station, Rajathgarh, Radhakishorepur, and Machhapur. The initiatives will reduce traffic congestion in the Nergundi-Cuttack-Barang-Rajathgarh area and the Rayagada-Singapur Road corridor, resulting in smoother train operations and shorter travel times.
With fewer delays and improved operating flow, the new rail flyovers will improve the entire travel experience for customers passing through these areas. Currently, important crossroads in the Khurda Road and Waltair divisions are congested owing to cross-traffic at Singapur Road and Rajathgarh-Radhakishorepur-Machhapur stations. These limits result in severe delays because up-and-down trains frequently have to wait for cross-traffic clearance. The new flyovers would eliminate these impediments by providing dedicated tracks for trains coming from multiple directions, ensuring uninterrupted passage. These enhancements, costing a total of ₹ 508.75 crore, are critical for enhancing Indian Railways’ operational efficiency, increasing train movement capacity, and decreasing delays.
