Vidarbha’s infrastructure development hits significant milestone with Amravati airport

The inauguration of Amravati Airport strengthens Vidarbha’s air connectivity, promising economic growth, improved accessibility, and stronger regional infrastructure under the UDAN scheme.

An important factor in improving regional connectivity and quickening the development of infrastructure throughout Vidarbha will be the recently opened Amravati Airport in Maharashtra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the airport on April 16, marking a significant step forward in the Centre’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which aims to connect tier-2 and tier-3 cities through affordable and accessible air travel.

The airport is located in Belora, about 15 kilometres from Amravati, and was built by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. The strategic location and carefully designed facilities are intended to meet both passenger and cargo needs, with a clear goal of boosting regional trade, tourism, and employment.

The airport has a 2,500-metre-long, 45-metre-wide runway that can handle Code-C aircraft like Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s. A modern terminal building spanning 3,000 square metres can accommodate over 300 passengers during peak hours, providing essential amenities and ensuring smooth passenger flow.

The infrastructure was designed with future scalability in mind, allowing for additional upgrades as demand increases. The government hopes that by integrating the airport into the larger regional connectivity framework, it will open up economic opportunities in agro-based industries, logistics, and MSMEs throughout the Vidarbha region.

Prime Minister Modi hailed the development as a long-awaited boost for Amravati and its surrounding districts, emphasising the importance of improved air infrastructure in promoting equitable development. Daily flights are expected to begin soon, allowing for faster access to major cities and strengthening Amravati’s position on India’s aviation map.
