AM/NS India launches corrosion-resistant Magnelis®

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) India introduces Magnelis®, a corrosion-resistant steel brand, enhancing domestic supply for infrastructure and renewable energy sectors.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between two of the top steelmakers in the world, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, announces the introduction of Magnelis®, a steel brand known across the world for its unmatched resistance to corrosion and capacity for self-healing.

The cutting-edge steel brand made its debut in Mumbai at a glamorous ceremony. ArcelorMittal’s unique brand, Magnelis®, is now produced and supplied in India, decreasing the nation’s reliance on imported speciality steel products and increasing supply efficiency for strategically significant, high-growth industries like renewable energy.

The CEO of ARCELORMITTAL Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), Dilip Oommen, states “The launch of Magnelis® in India is a testament to our commitment to fulfilling the nation’s growing demand for high-performance steel while contributing to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. By producing this world-class, import-substitute steel; we are not only delivering quality infrastructure solutions but also contributing to accelerate India’s clean energy transition. Magnelis® is the future of sustainable materials, and its introduction marks a significant step towards building the nation’s global-standard infrastructure.”

The Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Arcelormittal Nickel Steel India (AM/NS India), Rajan Dhar, explains, “The launch of Magnelis® in India is a pivotal moment for us as this unique solution has proven its performance in global solar projects, contributing to 50 GW of installed capacity. The production of the new offering here is cutting down delivery time and drastically reducing logistics costs, thus providing domestic customers with a faster and more efficient solution for their infrastructure needs as India is stepping up its nation-building initiatives. Other end-use sectors include road infrastructure (crash barriers), agriculture infrastructure (grain silos, farm equipment) and construction (pre-engineered building structures).”

Magnelis® is an innovative brand of alloy-coated steel that offers remarkable corrosion resistance and self-healing qualities. Its composition is unique, combining zinc, aluminium, and magnesium. Delivery of this premium value-added steel used to frequently take months because it was mostly imported from China, Japan, and Korea.

At its flagship facility in Hazira, Gujarat, AM/NS India has committed close to ₹ 1000 crores to set up a production line for Magnelis® with a capacity of 5 lakh tonnes annually. More than half of the local market share for steel supplied to solar projects is planned by AM/NS India. The product is perfect for solar panel mounting systems and other renewable energy applications that will be essential to assisting India’s energy transition because of its demonstrated performance in harsh settings. AM/NS Key companies in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors of India, such as Adani Green Energy, Reliance Industries, and NTPC, are already in advanced conversations to receive Magnelis® from India. Such agreements will ensure that Magnelis® is a cornerstone in creating the next generation of renewable projects across the country.
