Amit Shah, Managing Director, CMC on the evolution of tiles and the company’s exclusive tie up with Kalesinterflex, one of Turkey’s oldest and world’s most renowned ceramic tiles manufacturers pioneering in the ultra large sized formats.
What are some of the key areas in interiors where tiles can be used effectively?
Tiles are a versatile product and can be installed in various interior and exterior areas from flooring in lawn, lobby, kitchen and bathroom areas to wall clad and façade applications. Nowadays, tiles are also used fashionably as wall clad and façade. Thin tiles can be used as laminates for furniture surface covers as well.
From a 12cm X 12cm to large slabs, how have tiles evolved beyond a mere component restricted to hotels, bath spaces and hospitals?
The rapid improvements in technology help deliver superior quality products from time to time. Plus varied choices in material, sizes, designs and colours offer authority to customers to choose the best suitable product without making compromises. Rising disposable income, easy access to information and availability in choices has made customers more aware of the options available in the market. This also leads to competition. Innovation is the key and in the race to offer exclusivity in products, brands invest in research and development. With the help of developed technology, today brands provide customised variations and it’s no more restricted to luxurious spaces like hotels, bath areas or hospitals. Home owners are willing to spend on premium products and home design is given top priority.
What is the level of customisation you offer in terms of design and size?
CMC offers imported large size porcelain slabs under the brand Kalesinterflex. Kalesinterflex is a ceramic porcelain slab in 1000×3000 mm dimensions with 3 mm thickness. The products have a flexibility radius of 5.5m and this allows the large slab to cover concave and convex surfaces. Its 3mm thickness makes the slabs lighter in weight making them an ideal wall clad and façade material for most buildings. The brand offers over 40 varieties in various colors and patterns. Manufactured using the best quality raw material and unique technology, the product is highly resistant to fire, water and dust and hence is suitable for façade applications in tropical climates like India. Despite being thin, the tile is hard, durable and rates 7 on Mohs scale of hardness. Its smooth surface does not retain dirt and is virtually maintenance free. Another distinguishing aspect of this product is that it has been created using environment friendly technology and is GREEN certified.
What are some of your premium offerings for luxurious properties?
CMC has an exclusive tie up with Kalesinterflex, one of Turkey’s oldest and world’s most renowned ceramic tiles manufacturers pioneering in the ultra large sized formats. All the products offered under Kalesinterflex are of premium quality and are suitable for luxurious properties.
When it comes to selection of tiles for commercial vs residential spaces, what are the key differences?
For commercial spaces, the tiles chosen should be tough, sturdy and low on maintenance. They should also be durable, scratch resistant and fire proof. Taking into account the expected foot traffic, heat, humidity, and other environmental factors is a must. For residential properties the most important aspects are functionality and aesthetics, which add to the final design. Products for bathroom, kitchen and wet areas should be chosen judiciously. They should be non-porous, stain and scratch resistant, fire proof and easy to clean.
