Does aesthetics defy home security?
Owning a home is one common burning aspiration that every individual relates to. All dreams and contemplation of possessing a perfect home start at a very tender age but reaping the results take a sweet time. An army of designers and architects diligently plan the layout and develop the best design to please an individual’s euphoric imagination of their adobe, turning it into a reality.
The aesthetics game has remained vital for the coming generations, considering instagrammable spots or serene spaces in the home. With the significant influence of Vastu and a healthy mix of old decade inspirations and contemporary style, the interior choices are inclined to make the house look easy on the eyes. Deftly designed interiors suit the lifestyle, but they don’t serve the purpose of home safety. The essence of being at home is to feel safe and tranquil, but the intense focus on the timeless classic interiors has caused a disregard for home security solutions.
Security isn’t the first choice.
The designers and architects arm themselves with the best trending inspirations in the architectural space. Drawing the layout with alluring designs with an end mission creates an anomaly. The driving force behind their approach is the consumer’s mindset of possessing the best of the interior space world. In building a home with a synergy of the owner’s personality and architect’s ability, the thirst for perfection always stands tall; however, they miss the security aspect. Usually, home security sees the light of the day when the owner or builder questions the placement of cameras or the installation of security screens.
The end user’s perspective primarily influences the subordinate approach towards home security. The psychology relating to home security arises only when the user has faced any nefarious event or was suggested by a friend or neighbour. Though the broader implications about security are considered and implemented, home-level security becomes trivial.
The grill is no longer the pill.
Home aesthetics are an extension of your lifestyle and personality. According to Akhtar Imam, Director (Design and Projects) at Genesis Planners Pvt Ltd, “Consumer choices are highly depreciative of home safety measures, dreading to diminish the overall look of the home; hence the designers and architects do not usually suggest designs that incorporate the house safety element.” The push for eye-pleasing interiors and decors have outshined other necessary home security aspects.
As per reports, every three minutes, a burglary occurs in India, and the undue emphasis on the decor has already defied safety. Fear of losing their home flair, the Gen Z dodge the use of old-age traditional steel grills on the front doors or other entry points. The attraction towards the compounding benefit of grills made them the preferred choice of security among the sexagenarian and above. In the present scenario, it seems to be a dead cause. The steel grill often looks like an outcast in a home’s aesthetics. The prudent grill choice for the home’s security plays with interiors and makes the adobe look like a black sheep in the neighbourhood.
Gouri Upasani, the founder of Quadrometry Design, states, “High demand for attractive and fascinating home interiors does not allow architects to experiment with other home security systems. Moreover, suitable home security systems can hinder the architect’s vision, probably, one of the main reasons for zero shoutouts for home security systems from the architect’s end.”
Few tips for home safety
A concise method of an integrated system combining aesthetics and home safety needs to be a part of the early discussion in design planning.
● Holistic home security solutions such as security screens, cameras, and sensors can be adopted to secure your abode without compromising aesthetics.
● An adequate sill height or installation of a fall prevention system to prevent unforeseen accidents.
● Triple lock system doors with High-quality lock body snib-locking mechanism to avoid a break-in. Regular maintenance and checking of the home alarm system.
● Ensure proper locking of all entry points (doors and windows) to minimize the chances of burglary.
An alluring interior design fits in the discussion and your imagination, but let security be a priority. With burglaries and criminal cases increasing in India, the shift in the attitude toward safety systems is negligible. Evolving designs focus on an integrated system of combining two different worlds of aesthetics and safety and can create a mindset favouring home security without disturbing your home aesthetics.
