Materialising green
“To operate and to work inside sustainable buildings is the most economic way,” says Ajay Durrani, Managing Director, Bayer MaterialScience
Bayer MaterialScience, through its innovation and sustainability culture, is investing heavily in horizon technologies which are predicted to influence the future significantly. In an interview with ACE Update, Ajay Durrani shares how Bayer is continuously engaging with various stakeholders to enhance the eco-sensitive aspects of buildings in India.
Role in green buildingBayer MaterialScience plays the role of a raw material supplier. Additionally, the company offers a unique portfolio of products and material solutions for energy-efficient, sustainable and cost-effective buildings to decision makers in the construction industry which is backed by a commitment to quality and innovation. The EcoCommercial Buildings built by Bayer in seven countries are examples of its capabilities.
Through its global expertise and local experience, Bayer complements its material solutions with system integrating and networking abilities.
Essential products for green buildingsMaterials matter. Inside and out, Bayer’s building materials and technologies make products easier for architects to meet their green building goals without sacrificing design aesthetics. Bayer presents a list of technologies from energy-efficient insulation to durable, aesthetically pleasing polycarbonate window glazing, pultruded polyurethane window lineal, advanced coatings and sealants and materials for light emitting diodes (LEDs). some of the essential products include polyurethane thermal insulation foam for building envelop and haigh UV resistant polycarbonate sheets.
Polyurethane thermal insulation foam for building envelop: Insulation is critical to reduce energy consumption. Low thermal conductivity, airtightness, strength, ease of processability and adhesion to surfaces are a package of properties which make polyurethane thermal insulation foam stand apart.
High UV resistant polycarbonate sheets: Bayer’s Makrolon polycarbonate sheet products provide the strength, energy efficiency and design freedom that architects want. They offer high light transmission and energy saving, reduced emission, and they are lightweight.
Adapting sustainabilityBayer MaterialScience, through its innovation and sustainability culture, is investing heavily in horizon technologies which are predicted to influence the future significantly. Its materials offer various solutions for energy efficiency. Bayer is continuously engaging with various stakeholders in matters of technology, advocacy and partnerships to enhance the eco-sensitive aspects of buildings in India.
The EcoCommercial Building built by Bayer in India has reported net positive for the last 3 years. Inaugurated in 2011, the building draws 100 per cent of its electricity from a photovoltaic plant and requires approximately 70 per cent less power than comparable buildings in the region. Today, it is the only LEED Platinum status Eco Commercial Building (ECB) in India, because it is an environmentally sustainable building, meeting an impressive 64 out of 69 parameters laid down by LEED. By 2013, it produced more electricity (68,748 kWh) than what it consumed (67,258 kWh), leaving it with a surplus of 1,490 kWh for the year.
The EcoCommercial Building Network brings together high-performing technologies that offer cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact. It helps building decision makers evaluate systems and cost performance in the early planning phase for low-energy and low-emission buildings, and provides a single point of access to make their goals a reality.
Bayer MaterialScience also leads the India Insulation Forum which is in partnership with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to promote stakeholder awareness, capacity building for testing facilities of building insulation materials and training manuals for insulation of buildings. Bayer is also innovating to build the world’s first agro waste board-based dwelling.
