PM GatiShakti promotes India’s infrastructure with geospatial technology

PM GatiShakti is enhancing India’s infrastructure by integrating data and streamlining project planning and implementation.

The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) for multi-modal connectivity, launched on October 13, 2021, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would reshape India’s infrastructure development during the next three years. The effort is making significant progress by integrating data from 44 central ministries and 36 states/UTs, resulting in a more efficient, transparent, and outcome-driven system. It promoted project execution, decreased logistics costs, and improved service delivery throughout the country.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal emphasised that PM GatiShakti established a new paradigm for how India plans and executes large-scale infrastructure projects. Data integration has allowed for more efficient collaboration between ministries, resulting in faster implementation. According to Secretary DPIIT Shri Amardeep Singh Bhatia, the platform’s geospatial technology, combined with a government approach, has significantly accelerated infrastructure planning and development. Over the previous three years, more than 44 Ministries and 36 States/UTs have adopted the platform, benefiting from real-time data analysis and synchronised decision-making.

One of the initiative’s most notable accomplishments is the migration of all 44 Central Ministries and 36 States/UTs to a single platform, integrating approximately 1,600 data layers. These layers are critical for planning and carrying out infrastructure projects, allowing for a coordinated approach to regional development. The Networking Design Group (NPG) looked at more than 200 large-scale projects using PM GatiShakti’s principles of multimodal infrastructure design, last-mile connectivity, intermodal linkages, and logistics efficiency.

All 36 states and union territories have established State Master Plans (SMPs) aligned with the National Master Plan to promote synchronised regional growth. Over 533 projects are being uploaded to the PM GatiShakti platform, allowing states to streamline their infrastructure investments. This data-driven strategy, aided by GIS-based tools, supports better-informed decision-making and contributes to India’s Net Zero by 2070 goals by emphasising green infrastructure and sustainable logistics.

The initiative also promotes global collaboration, with diplomats visiting Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations to highlight PM Gati Shakti’s achievements. The government is considering giving the private sector secure access to non-sensitive data to boost infrastructure construction.

As the PM GatiShakti platform celebrates three years of development, it remains committed to India’s objective of developing a modern, linked infrastructure network that aligns with the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat aspirations.
