SDMC opens first tech lab to check development supplies

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has constructed its first technical laboratory for testing development and roadway supplies. Following ISO accreditation, the RK Puram lab can be used by a variety of businesses.

The laboratory advanced was built at a cost of Rs 1.7 crore and is equipped with tools worth Rs 1.2 crore. It has testing facilities for cement and aggregates, metal rebars, bitumen for highway works, water for development, concrete and precast concrete, bricks and soils, tiles, flush doorways, and paint.

“Despite the fact that the complex was built some time ago and staff selected for the lab, we were unable to put in modern tools due to a lack of funding,” said Colonel BK Oberoi (retd), head of SDMC’s standing committee. “Now, we’ve been able to outfit the lab with cutting-edge digital equipment and a variety of tools.”
“Up until now, we’ve both been sending look at samples of supplies used by contractors to the North Delhi Municipal Company’s laboratory,” the chairman stated. On several occasions, civic bodies have sought advice from the Sri Ram Institute of Industrial Analysis, which is located near Delhi College.To prevent wasting money and time, a decision was made in 2015 to establish our own lab, where we could conduct tests at any time.”

Oberoi stated that the grade of labour and the longevity of the completed jobs depended on cement and aggregates, metal re-bars, bitumen, bricks, and even the water utilised for development, and that all of these components should be investigated.
“For example, if the cement is a few months old, its energy is reduced by half. It’s the same with a variety of different materials,” Oberoi explained.

Different companies will be charged a fee to use the technical laboratory’s examination services. “This venture will also create revenue for SDMC.” We want to pursue ISO certification after the lab has been successfully commissioned, according to an SDMC representative.
