Shree Cement installs solar power plant in Andhra Pradesh unit
Through 1 GW of capacity, Shree Cement achieves a significant milestone, supported by a recently completed 19.5 MW solar project in Andhra Pradesh.
Achieving one GW (1,000 MW) of installed electricity capacity is a major milestone for Shree Cement Ltd, which is the third largest cement maker in India based on capacity. The commissioning of a 19.5 MW solar power plant at its manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh served as a marker for this achievement. The 1 GW capacity demonstrates Shree Cement’s diverse approach to satisfying the energy demand for cement manufacture. It consists of a combination of thermal, wind, solar, and waste heat recovery power plants.
The portfolio of renewable energy sources has been expanded significantly, with investments exceeding Rs 4000 crore. At 499 MW, this represents over 50percent of the installed power capacity. Notably, Shree Cement has one of the largest waste heat recovery capacities in the world—244 MW—in the cement sector.
In the future, the construction of more RE capacity is expected to need capital expenditures of approximately Rs 1000 crore in FY25. This would comprise 34 MW of waste heat recovery capacity in Karnataka and Rajasthan, 36 MW of wind power in Rajasthan, and 132 MW of solar capacity spread over five states: Jharkhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
“Achieving a power capacity portfolio of this size ensures that we have abundant electricity to power not only our existing cement production but also our expansion projects,” says Neeraj Akhoury, Managing Director of Shree Cement, in response to this milestone. We’ll provide the central grid and the states our excess electricity.
“We can now produce cement in a way that is both more economical and sustainable thanks to the significant integration of green electricity.” We currently get the greatest percentage of our power from renewable resources—nearly 56 percent —in the cement sector in India. Our goal is to inspire good change across the industry and establish a benchmark for sustainability in the cement sector, Akhoury continued.
Shree Cement has says that it would join the RE100 project, pledging to use only renewable energy sources for all of its activities by 2050. Sustainable development is the cornerstone of Shree Cement’s business strategy, and the company has led the way in using cutting-edge technology to cut emissions and use less non-renewable resources. The business is also looking at cutting-edge methods including green hydrogen, battery storage, and pump storage to improve the use of renewable electricity.
Shree Cement is well on its way to become a cutting-edge, environmentally friendly provider of building materials, with plans to grow from its current 56.4 MTPA capacity to 80 million tones by 2028.
