Vedanta Aluminium wins ‘Energy & Environment excellence award’
Outstanding awards are given to Vedanta Aluminum’s Lanjigarh refinery in honour of its sustainability efforts, which show notable progress in environmental preservation and energy efficiency.
Through its alumina refinery operation in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi district, Vedanta Aluminium, the largest producer of aluminium in India, has won both the coveted Kalinga Energy Excellence Award and the Kalinga Environment Excellence Award. The Odisha State Pollution Control Board, the Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad, and the Institute of Quality and Environment Management (IQEMS) collaborated to offer these prizes.
As part of Vedanta Aluminium’s sustainability goals, the company’s Lanjigarh unit, India’s leading producer of smelter-grade alumina, has implemented a number of initiatives, including Net Zero Carbon by 2050, Net Water Positivity by 2030, efficient waste management, biodiversity restoration, and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies across all operations. The company’s eco-friendly efforts have been recognised in the highest circles; in the S&P Corporate Sustainability evaluation (CSA) rankings for the evaluation year 2023, Vedanta Aluminium achieved the highest ranking.
“Our success in energy efficiency and environmental conservation, driven by our commitment to sustainable operations, is reflected in our numerous accolades,” says John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, in response to the accomplishment. One of our key priorities when making decisions is striking a balance between a sustainable value chain and greater operational efficiency. These accomplishments highlight our unwavering commitment to excellence via a sustainable business strategy, supporting Vedanta Aluminum’s revolutionary journey.”
Vedanta’s emphasis on addressing the nation’s expanding requirements is in line with the needs of the environment. With measures like boosting the use of renewable energy sources like biomass for boiler cofiring, deploying lithium-ion electric forklifts, and encouraging staff to utilise electric vehicles, the company is helping to transform the sector in a sustainable way. Due to these measures, production has increased by 20 PC but overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity has decreased significantly by 9 percent in FY24 compared to the baseline in FY21.
By the introduction of water reutilization strategies, joint efforts with local communities, and ongoing monitoring of water levels, Vedanta Aluminium has recycled more than 15 billion litres of water throughout its activities in FY24. Additionally, the business has carried out methodical evaluations and located biodiversity hotspots and critical ecosystems close to its plants. The business has inked a Memorandum of Understanding to apply nature-based solutions for enhancing climate resilience and biodiversity preservation around its activities.
Additionally, Vedanta Aluminium guarantees the profitable use of fly ash, a byproduct of the power generating process, and bauxite residue, a byproduct of the alumina refining process. More than 1,00,000 metric tones of red mud have been used so far as a result of the use of bauxite residue for projects like building roads around operational areas, gathering soil in wick drain development by mixing it with fly ash and providing raw materials to the cement industry. Fly ash is supplied to the National Highway Authority of India for use in building roads and to brick factories owned by local communities, which enhances the villagers’ income and ensures its profitable utilisation. In FY23, garbage went to use in excess of 200 percent as a result of these measures.
