Ensuring resilient facades

A good design and detailing complemented with successful implementation creates stunning and long-lasting building facades.

How has the demand for façade solutions evolved in recent years?
The demand for facade solutions has increased several fold. The construction industry is constantly adopting new technologies, which require facades that are easy to implement, efficient, and economical. Facade industry supply chain contractors are also getting busier and expanding their services across several cities. Several industry segments, like fenestration (windows), curtain walls, and cladding, cater to various projects.

Can you tell us about the range of façade solutions your company offers?
We offer basic designs to advanced facade solutions, ranging from small to large projects. Each project has different requirements. We offer the most feasible solutions, considering the project size, location, design conditions, and budget. One key aspect we rely upon is the skills available based on the project’s location. If the project is in a challenging geographical location, we offer simple and less complex designs that do not require complex skill sets.

Can you discuss the integration of smart technologies into facade systems to enhance building performance?
We are experiencing an evolution of technologies for facade materials, fabrications, and finishes. Building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology, where solar modules are integrated into products, is a smart technology explored in various architectural elements such as sunshades, vertical fins, and roofs. Switchable or dynamic glass, whose colour changes in response to sunlight, is an interesting, multifunctional glass product we have implemented in a few of our recent projects. Similarly, various new technologies have been adopted in fabrication using CNC machines. Using this equipment has given us high-quality output with much higher finishing quality.

Can you discuss innovative solutions you’ve developed to overcome specific façade-related challenges?
We have developed a “passive vent” product and successfully implemented it in Lodha The Park Residential Towers, Worli, Mumbai, a large-scale, high-rise project. The passive vent is a small component integrated with facade windows that provides fresh air into the interiors without opening windows. Keeping openable windows for fresh air on a high-rise building is a challenge because of heavy wind. Hence, our proposed passive vent is an innovative solution for well-ventilated internal spaces without discomfort.

How do you ensure the aesthetic appeal of your facade solutions while meeting functional requirements?
Our vast experience with various materials and deep industry knowledge have helped architects and clients decide on the required materials and design. We respect the architectural and visual aspects while engineering facade solutions that balance functional and other aspects. At BES, we ensure that our products’ lifecycles are long and do not lead to defects and failures. Careful attention is given to details so that risks of poor workmanship can be avoided at implementation.
