The light effect should be visible, not the source

This interaction reveals why it is important to design lights on a project-to-project basis and how to provide subtle, ambient lighting.

Can you share details on one of your best projects and walk us through the concept, challenges faced, and the kind of lights used in the lighting design?
The facade had several vertical and horizontal louvre elements in one of our recent residential projects. Lighting those elements uniformly to create perfect harmony was challenging. So, we decided to go with a lighting design with inground spots with special beams, spike-mounted spots, tree belt-mounted spots, floor washer lights, and linear lens profile luminaires for the washing canopy.

What is your design aesthetic when it comes to lighting? Are specific themes, styles, or elements consistently inspiring your work?
At Innovative Design Studio, we do not stick to one single theme or style. Since every project is different, we analyse the design needs for every project and develop patterns that complement the needs. Subtle, ambient lights with soft accentuation inspire us a lot. We believe that a design should speak the story of the project. Ultimately, it is all about storytelling and making occupants and visitors feel the created vibe of the space.

Can you outline the steps to ensure energy efficiency in your lighting designs?
While speaking of energy efficiency, we try to use only the required illumination in the desired application area to ensure minimal light wastage. We also ensure that we use only low-wattage fixtures with high-lumen output fixtures, not compromising on the quality of light. We follow this philosophy in all our projects.

How do you ensure that the lights in your design are consistent for an optimally lit space?
To us, it is about creating contrast that results in the perception of depth in space. We use flat lighting scenarios, which are good for task lighting applications. We also ensure that the lighting is restricted as necessary, which can create a fine line balance.

The availability of numerous optics options within the same family of compact fixtures excites us. This allows us to be creative without any technical restrictions.

What is your design philosophy to ensure minimal light pollution?
Our design philosophy emphasises that the light effect should be visible, not the source. To minimise light pollution, we incorporate glare shields, snoots, visors, and honeycomb louvres to ensure light is directed precisely where needed without unnecessary spilling or glare.
