An insight into integrated landscape design
Shaikh Emanur Afzal Ali, Horticulturist at Evergreen Landscape Designer & Consultants, emphasises landscape design with architectural planning.
Can you provide an overview of your landscaping experience and highlight key projects you’ve worked on?
We have over 7+ years of experience in landscaping, specialising in residential and commercial projects. We have designed and implemented beautiful gardens, including plant selection, hardscape features, and irrigation systems. Our expertise in sustainable practices and budget management ensures that projects are visually stunning and cost-effective. We are passionate about creating outdoor spaces that leave a lasting impact and are committed to delivering high-quality results. One of the most prominent buildings, Kanchanjunga at Peddar Road, was developed and designed by Charles Correa; we have created a beautiful balcony garden at one of the apartments on the 16th floor.
How do you blend landscape design with architectural planning to create a cohesive relationship between built structures and natural elements?
Our approach to integrating landscape design with architectural planning is rooted in the unity between built structures and natural elements. A successful design should create a seamless blend between the two, enhancing a space’s overall experience and functionality. We begin by closely collaborating with architects and urban planners from the project’s inception. This collaboration ensures that the design elements are integrated from the beginning rather than as an afterthought. We emphasise the importance of shared objectives, consistent materials, and a cohesive design language.
How do you consider local climate, soil, and native vegetation in your sustainable designs?
In designing landscapes, we prioritise sustainability by aligning designs with the local climate, soil conditions, and native vegetation. Careful analysis of the climate informs plant choices, soil conditions dictate amendments and native species promote environmental harmony. The result is landscapes that thrive while minimising resource use and supporting local ecosystems.
How does sustainability influence your projects, including eco-friendly features like rain gardens, green roofs, and water-efficient irrigation systems?
Sustainability is paramount in landscape architecture projects. We integrate eco-friendly features like rain gardens, green roofs, and water-efficient irrigation systems to minimise environmental impact. These elements enhance biodiversity, manage water sustainably, and reduce energy consumption, resulting in landscapes that thrive while contributing to a greener future.
How do you ensure hardscape elements blend with the design and serve their practical functions?
We ensure that hardscape elements in landscaping harmonise with the overall design and fulfil practical functions. By selecting materials and designs that align with the aesthetic theme and considering factors like accessibility, safety, and erosion control, these elements seamlessly blend into the landscape, enhancing form and function.
How do you adjust your design for different landscape purposes?
We tailor our design approach to the intended use of the landscape. For residential gardens, we prioritise aesthetics and personal preferences. In public parks, we focus on durability, safety, and accessibility. Urban spaces demand multi-functionality and sustainability. Flexibility is key to creating landscapes that meet specific needs and enhance their purpose.
