Building sturdy bridges

Modern bridge construction demands technologies that are faster, safer and innovative.

Infrastructure development has a significant share in India’s economy, be it roads, railways, metro-rail, airports or affordable housing. Construction of bridges is at the core of any development for roads, railways and metro rail.

Keeping up standards
For nearly 50 years, PERI products and systems have proved themselves in the market globally. PERI has developed ground-breaking formwork and scaffolding technologies, which continues to set standards in the industry, says Raj Lakhani, Managing Director, Peri India Pvt Ltd.

“With projects like Mahatma Mandir, the Statue of Unity, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Mumbai Metro, etc., using our state-of-the-art formwork and scaffolding system, we have proved our mettle in delivering customised solutions for every complex need in a cost-effective manner. PERI formwork technologies can really fast track bridge construction,” adds Lakhani.

NHAI has constructed six-lane highway over Chambal river. Project includes total 43 Piers for bridge with varying height of 27 metres. The pier size at bottom was 7500mmx2500mm and at top is 7000mmx2000mm (i.e. reduction of 500mm). Semi-circular at both the end. Also, it has limited access to crane as it is over a river.

PERI provided a solution with hydraulic climbing system RCS along with VARIO formwork system. Customised solution was provided with adaptor in order to climb the system.Vijay Mistry construction Pvt Ltd was contractor for the project. They could complete the project faster with two sets of VARIO formwork system. One set for 7500mmx2500mm and another set for 7000mmx2000mm size reduced the cycle time to 4 days.

Constructing safe
For construction of new bridges, suitable materials with innovated technology were required to increase life of bridges and safety of construction, according to Mithilesh Kumar, Director, Layher Scaffolding Systems Pvt Ltd.

“Damage of bridges happens due to longitudinal and transverse movement of the bridge superstructure and substructure. Continuous maintenance is required to reduce damage of all old bridges,” he says.

Usage of new innovated materials, new production process and design improvements is needed to make systems lighter, faster, stronger, and hence even more economical. Layher Light weight – The next dimensions in scaffolding which will help to increase safety in construction of bridges.

During construction of the bridge, the Allround bridging system was a crucial advantage. With the extremely strong Allround supplementary component – a modular lattice beam – it is possible to build both bridges with a free-span of up to about 30 metres long and support beams for heavy loads quickly and easily.

For construction of bridges, Layher Allround bridging systems – the addition to Layher Allround Scaffolding with a few additional components, a solution for wide-span footbridges or bracing structures for heavy loads can be provided.

Access to the bridges took the form of two stairways and a wheelchair ramp. For these jobs too, the Layher product range always has the right components to hand: from lightweight aluminium platform stairways and separate stairway stringers for different loads, to child safety guard rails. For the safety of the many passengers, the scaffolding constructors selected for the stairway access two parallel structures to match the double bridge solution.
