Concepts around Lighting
In general, lighting is meant for illumination and proper illumination of a space is largely depends on the lighting techniques. Akash Kakar, Managing Director of LSI, shares his expertise on the emerging areas of lighting designing
Lighting plays an integral part in defining spaces. Selecting lighting for a place is very important as it is more than just the placement of the lighting fixtures. The way one place a light can have a significant effect on the overall look and feel of that place. By using different types of lighting techniques, one can create a very different feeling altogether.  A well-defined room, which has proper light effects, surely can add comfort.
Most people already know what lighting means, but it is crucial to highlight because lighting has its own agenda and is basically meant for illumination. Over illumination is the presence of lighting intensity beyond what is required for a specific activity. Therefore, the only way of providing general illumination to a space is to refract light on some reflective surfaces to eliminate the incomplete interior space. In this regard, it is important to note that one cannot illuminate space without lighting their interiors with correct choice of light.
Lighting a place in itself sounds very interesting and exciting unless it is done in a proper manner. A beautifully lit place draws everybody’s attention and looks more flamboyant. Eye-catching bright colours as well as beautiful lights and lamps are such examples. Providing general illumination to a space – which is done by refracting light – also plays a very important role. One such way can be using crystal in our chandelier or the painting on a wall or simply a curtain in the room.
Accenting important artefacts or objects in the space is again important to give a perfect scene to the interior spaces. Emphasising or highlighting on important artworks or objects requires right selection of light as well as their placement.
Today’s lighting trends are more towards minimalistic styles with a lot of emphasis given to accent lighting of art and other objects. This approach, which provides sufficient light most of the time, enhances the value of articles on display. The emphasis also lies on choosing glare-free lighting fixtures to create a nice ambience and an atmosphere of making the lighting surface completely invisible to people. Red-coloured decorative chandeliers and table lamps are very popular in this season and easily available at professional lighting stores. These are like cherry on the cake and definite add-on to the ambience.
Decorative chandeliers and table lamps also help in lighting the corners as well as the centre of the interior and provide general illuminations in the interior spaces. Therefore, a mix of accent of lighting on vertical surfaces and general lighting from general lighting products like chandeliers and table lamps are just amazing combination which provides a good lighting effect for overall interior spaces.
If the colour, in case of floor, is very dark, much illumination can’t be achieved. It won’t provide illumination or neither will cover the empty spaces. Here, it is advised to use direct lighting on the vertical surfaces of the room because it helps in achieving good lighting levels for general illuminations.
Finally, the only key is to look out for good and magnificent lighting which will make the ambience great and relaxing.
