“Surya lamps save up to 85% electricity”

“LED lamp is completely mercury free and saves up to 85 per cent energy. It works in the voltage range of 110V to 300V. Life of Surya LED Lamps is 25,000 hours,” says Raju Bista, Managing Director, Surya Roshni Ltd.
LEDs are fast replacing the incandescent lamps. Keeping this in mind Surya Roshni has ventured in to LED segment. In an interaction with ACE Update, Raju Bista talks about recent developments at Surya and its future roadmap.
Please brief us on the overview of Surya Roshni.Surya Roshni is a multinational company which takes pride for being largest Indian lighting company and largest G.I and hollow section pipes manufacturer. Surya has proved its mettle in every realm of excellence. The elegant product line includes wide range of FTL (Tube lights), CFL lamps, GLS lamps, HPSV and metal halide lamps, an innovative range luminaries with LED and induction technologies, lighting poles, high masts etc. Surya enjoys about 25 per cent market share in India. Surya Roshni is the only company which is manufacturing half-inch to 100 inch diameter pipes. It is the largest exporter of ERW pipe of India.
Recently, Surya Roshni has embarked upon a new journey by entering into the realm of fans. Surya launched “Pick Me” designs of colourful range of ceiling, table, pedestal and wall mounting fans along with the wide range of domestic exhaust fans.
The next generation LED technology is the latest addition to Surya’s range of lighting series. This energy-efficient luminary is available in many options to offer a flexible LED lighting solution which has took the LED market by storm.
Is Surya Roshni into LED segment?Yes, Surya Roshni is into LED segment. Today lighting is migrating from conventional to solid state, which is 100 per cent lighting electronics. This emerging technology will remain development-oriented technology full of opportunities and challenges with sustainability as key.  We at Surya Roshni have done investment for design, development and manufacturing of LED products. Our LED product portfolio is having both indoor and outdoor luminaries.
In addition, LEDs are fast replacing the GLS bulbs (incandescent). Keeping this in mind Surya Roshni has come out with LED lamps. They are energy efficient and environment friendly as well as power saver. LED lamp is completely mercury free and saves up to 85 per cent energy. It works in the voltage range of 110V to 300V. Life of Surya LED Lamps is 25,000 hours. Surya LED luminaries series also consists of a wide basket of luminaries catering to different application of indoor as well as outdoor illumination. The range comprises of commercial (LED tubes, downlights, recess or surface mounted luminaries), outdoor – street lighting, high bay lighting, flooding lighting, landscape lighting, and commercial lighting.
Aren’t LED lights more expensive than bulbs and tube lights?LED products need to be seen from sustainability, total product life cycle, and value creation to consumers and channel partners. Although LEDs seem to be expensive than other type of lighting, they are very cost effective in the long-run. First of all it saves energy and secondly they operate for a much longer duration than ordinary lamps. Their design flexibility, powerful nature, small size and availability in almost all kinds of colours make them an attractive choice for household and other use.
Your view on LED market and future in India. This emerging technology is having very bright future in India. Today market is expected to grow at 40 – 45 per cent for LEDs in India. But this will remain technology driven for at least for next 5 years, where innovation to market will be the key with sustainability and value creation throughout product life cycle will be very important. We started the marketing of LED products.
We have also started the in-house production of indoor and outdoor LED luminaries at our plants. This includes LED bulbs, LED down lighters and LED street lights. Surya’s focus is to educate and promote only sustainable energy efficiency and drive LED products. Wherever application warrants to help safeguard longevity and energy efficiency to drive competitive advantage and value proposition for our channel partners, Surya Roshni creates landmark in lighting industry by adding in its product portfolio bulbs for 5W and 7W, which shall replace 40W and 60W incandescent lamps. Future of LED market looks very bright.
Could you explain about your R&D Centre?Surya Technology & Innovation Centre (STIC) at Noida is jewel in the crown of Surya. This is one of the most advanced state-of-the-art lighting laboratory and research centre with specific focus on LED. This set up is already DSIR (Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology) approved and we are  in process of taking NABL  accreditation. It is equipped with the most advanced photometric  laboratory which houses high-speed automatic mirror photo goniometer from LMT Germany.                                                                              It is undoubtedly the best equipment available for light measurement and opticalevaluation for conventional lighting system as well as precise LED measurement.
With all the upgradation, today STIC Noida facility is one of the pioneer facilities for LED products design and development in India having best infrastructure for optics design, electronics design, thermal design and mechanical design. The same has been acknowledged by national and international, renowned lighting bodies.  STIC has been listed as one of the best testing laboratories in India by BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency), for the measurement complying BIS Standard and International Standard of LED lighting System.
With all these initiatives, Surya is proliferating with the design and development of the most energy efficient environment friendly lighting products as well as providing design guidance on how to use it scientifically and aesthetically through its innovation in lighting design. It opens a new dimension to lighting practice, leading to evolve “Green India”.
What sets you apart from the existing companies in this industry?Surya has an excellent network from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and North-East to Gujarat with 2 lakhs retailers and 1,500 dealers.
