By increasing operational efficiency, cutting carbon emissions, and acquiring 66 electric forklifts, Vedanta Aluminium bolsters its sustainability initiatives.

The biggest aluminium manufacturer in India, Vedanta Aluminium, is consolidating its position as the country’s biggest user of electric lithium-ion forklifts by adding 66 new vehicles to its fleet. Reiterating its commitment to sustainable operations, the business has successfully added 22 more electric forklifts to its smelting operations in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This expansion supports Vedanta Aluminum’s carbon reduction efforts.

“At Vedanta Aluminium, sustainability is a business imperative,” says John Slaven, CEO, in reference to this initiative. We consistently implement cutting-edge procedures to improve our operational excellence. The installation of sixty-six electric lithium-ion forklifts is a significant step towards quickening the shift to a Net Zero future.

These forklifts are used at Vedanta Aluminium’s facilities in Jharsuguda, Lanjigarh, and Chhattisgarh, along with its BALCO smelter in Chhattisgarh. They have the ability to charge batteries more quickly and safely. This not only greatly reduces carbon emissions but also revolutionises operational efficiency. The adoption of electric lithium-ion forklifts considerably reduces the company’s carbon footprint by:
A possible yearly decrease in greenhouse gas emissions of about 2,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
Significant reduction in the amount of diesel used, anticipated to save more than 8.4 lakh litres annually.

By 2030, the corporation aims to reduce carbon emissions all of its light motor vehicle (LMV) fleet. This continuous effort is evidence of Vedanta Aluminium’s unwavering commitment to assess and implement cutting-edge technology in order to decarbonise its operations. Especially when it comes to material handling, Vedanta is one of the first corporations in India to implement sustainable operational procedures.

Adding more electric forklifts to the fleet is a further step in Vedanta Aluminium’s goal of being Net Zero by 2050. The company is implementing a dual approach to meet its carbon footprint reduction goals. Firstly, it will enhance operational excellence and include more renewable energy sources into its energy mix. Secondly, it will offset its carbon footprint through major afforestation activities. Through its activities, the business is opening up more worldwide access to sustainably produced, high-quality aluminium to ensure a greener future for the planet.

Functioning under Vedanta Limited, Vedanta Aluminium is the primary producer of aluminium in India, accounting for over half of the country’s total production in FY24 with 2.37 million tonnes. It is a pioneer in the production of aluminium products with added value that are essential to key sectors. Due to its cutting-edge sustainable development strategies, Vedanta Aluminium is ranked No. 1 in the world for the aluminium industry in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023. Encouraging developing applications of aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future’ for a greener tomorrow is the company’s objective, which it fulfils with its world-class smelters of aluminium, alumina refinery, and power plants in India.
