Nitin Gadkari urges States and UTs to collaborate for road transport sector transformation

Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, called for the active support of States and Union Territories (UTs) in strengthening policies and strategies for the transformation of the road transport sector.

The call came during a meeting of Transport Ministers of States and UTs held in New Delhi, which saw participation from ministers for transport from 15 states and UTs, as well as senior officials from various transportation bodies. The meeting discussed a range of concurrent policy matters, including the review of road traffic regulations, setting up of vehicle fitness stations, financing of E-buses, and streamlining the issuance of driving licenses. Nitin Gadkari discussed the various initiatives taken by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) and requested active support from state and UT authorities for their effective implementation.

During the meeting, the transport ministers of states and UTs supported and appreciated the initiatives taken by MoRTH and provided their suggestions and inputs for further strengthening the policies and strategies for the transformation of the road transport sector. The objective of the meeting was to find new and innovative solutions through mutual cooperation and consultation.

The meeting also highlighted the various initiatives taken by MoRTH for the development of future-ready road transport in the country. The presentations on the review of speed limits, vehicle fitness testing infrastructure, automation of learner’s license, and financing of electric buses were given by senior officials from MoRTH and transport experts.

The meeting discussed the status of the implementation of the Voluntary Vehicle Fleet Modernisation Program (VVMP) across states and the development of ATS infrastructure critical for the implementation of the mandatory automated fitness testing regime. The strengthening of the procedure for the issuance of learner’s licenses was also discussed, with greater emphasis proposed on driver education to create awareness about road traffic rules and responsible driving behaviour.

The meeting also covered the need to explore new business models for reducing the financial risks of the bus operator/ OEMs and to improve private participation in the adoption of electric buses. Discussions also included the need to develop innovative financing mechanisms for the procurement and operations of electric buses.

In conclusion, the meeting of Transport Ministers of States and UTs under the chairmanship of Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasised the need for mutual cooperation and consultation in finding new and innovative solutions for the transformation of the road transport sector in the country.
