India’s first bullet train plunges with 21 Km underwater tunnel

India is set to make history with its first-ever bullet train project, which will travel underwater for a staggering 21 kilometres. This ambitious project, known as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) or the “Bullet Train,” is a joint venture between the Indian and Japanese governments. It aims to revolutionize the way people travel in the country and boost economic growth in the region.

The underwater stretch of the bullet train will be located in the Thane Creek, which lies between Mumbai and the western state of Gujarat. This section will be a highlight of the 508-kilometre-long high-speed rail corridor, which will connect Mumbai, the financial capital of India, to Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat.

The underwater tunnel is expected to be a technological marvel, with advanced engineering techniques and state-of-the-art technology. It will be constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), a technique known for its efficiency in tunneling through challenging terrains. The tunnel will be built at a depth of around 20 meters below the seabed, making it a first-of-its-kind infrastructure project in India.

Once completed, the underwater section of the bullet train will reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just about 2 hours, compared to the current 7-8 hours by conventional train. The high-speed rail will have a top speed of 320 km/h, making it one of the fastest trains in India. It is expected to cater to over 17,000 passengers per day, providing a convenient and comfortable mode of travel for commuters, tourists, and business travelers alike.

Despite the challenges, the bullet train project has garnered significant support from various stakeholders, including the Indian and Japanese governments, local authorities, and businesses. It is seen as a game-changer in India’s transportation sector, bringing cutting-edge technology, enhanced connectivity, and economic growth to the region.

As India gears up for this historic milestone, the underwater bullet train project is expected to set a new benchmark in the country’s transportation infrastructure. It signifies India’s commitment to embracing advanced technologies and improving connectivity for its citizens. With the completion of the underwater tunnel, India will join the ranks of other countries with underwater rail connections, such as Japan and China, and mark a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse.
