Kolkata metro railway underground construction commences

Kolkata Metro Railway announces the commencement of construction on the underground Mominpur-Esplanade stretch of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor (Purple Line). This development is part of the larger 15.08 km corridor in south Kolkata, aimed at improving public transportation infrastructure.

The corridor’s initial 6.5-kilometre stretch from Joka to Taratala was inaugurated on December 30, 2022, and extended to Majerhat on March 6, 2024, enhancing connectivity for residents and commuters.

The current phase focuses on the underground segment, spanning from Mominpur to Esplanade. Tunnelling operations will start in Khidderpore, extending to Victoria Memorial Station. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be deployed from the premises of St. Thomas School to expedite the process.

However, logistical challenges exist. Temporary relocation of three club tents in the Maidan area—Calcutta Police Club, Calcutta Kennel Club, and Rajasthan Club—is necessary for constructing the Park Street station. This step aims to minimise disruptions to the community during infrastructure development.

Additionally, for the Esplanade Metro station, measures include relocating the Kolkata Mounted Police paddock to Saheed Minar Maidan and dewatering the Manohardas Tarag waterbody to facilitate tunnel construction.

The initiative reflects Kolkata Metro Railway’s commitment to expanding and modernising the city’s metro network. Once completed, the corridor will enhance intra-city connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote sustainability.
