Nippon Paint introduces colour vision trends
Four major archetypes were identified for 2024–2025: Heal, Bloomers, Hive, and Soulcore.
Nippon Paint India (Decorative) unveiled their Colour Vision Book for 2024–2025 at Outdoor Connections in Bengaluru. Colour Vision is the result of Nippon Paint’s collaboration with renowned colour expert Dr. Kaustav Sengupta and the National Institute of Fashion Technology’s colour consultant.
The Colour Vision II uses colour to celebrate the nation’s variety by dividing the country into geographical zones and predicting colour schemes for youth for the first time. India, a “colourful” but culturally varied country, has relied heavily on colour for its emotional, social, and cultural survival.
Dr. Kaustav Sengupta’s copyrighted method served as the foundation for the design of the Nippon Paint Colour Vision foresight system. Dr. Kaustav Sengupta (2018) describes the method’s special “Colour Foresight Cube,” which maps colour signifiers through signals and drivers to suggest the “shift” and comprehend the pattern of conceivable colour directions based on emotional, bio-behavioural, cultural, and social metatags. This method involves assigning a colour to each meta tag (social or bio-behavioural) and updating the cube accordingly. The cube uses technology to generate patterns across the three segments—youth, south, and north. Following their deciphering, these patterns are combined into colours that reflect the general thinking of the individuals in these sectors at the moment.
Twelve major archetypes were discovered through research; some of the more well-known ones are as follows:
- Heal: Shades like Sunken Forest, Cloud Grass, Diver’s Paradise, and Circus reflect the longing for comfort. Best
- Bloomers: Those who aspire to express themselves creatively using hues like Knockout Red, Be My Valentine, Shocking Yellow, and Leap of Faith
- Hive: the necessity of living together and forming bonds with hues such as Caribbean Coast, Young Violet, Electricity, and Orange Soda
- Soul core: A self-examination using hues such as Patchwark, Marry Go Round, Sea of Coral, and Darkest Hour
Colour vision forecasting was a special technique that required over 16 months and almost 30,000 meta-tags. Several focus groups comprising influencers, colour catalysts, domain specialists, colour practitioners, etc. were used to process the colour signals. At different stages of the research process, more than 55 catalysts from cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Pondicherry, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, etc. were involved.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Kaustav Sengupta, NIFT, says, “Unveiling the second edition of Nippon Paint Color Vision, spotlighting India’s inaugural zonal and youth colour forecast, we are extremely happy with the diverse palette that showcases the rich tapestry of our nation. I thank the Nippon Paint team for their continued partnership and hope architects and designers who possess a visionary compass to sculpt and journey through the vibrant landscapes of colour benefit from their projects and research efforts.”
Nippon Paint India President S. Mahesh Anand and Vice President of Marketing Mark Titus spoke to the group. Other well-known business titans who clarified the science underlying colour were:
