The Government of Tamil Nadu has been encouraging people to proactively contribute to the field of environmental protection through its “Green Awards”. Every year this award is given to the District Collectors, Industries, Educational Institutions, and resident welfare associations.
In order to encourage the civil society toward environmental protection, the Tamil Nadu Government and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have included individuals as well for the award. Hence from 2021 -22, the award has been renamed as “Tamil Nadu Green Champion Award”. The award includes prize money of Rs. 1 Lakh for each winning individual/organization and is given to 100 individuals/organizations for their exemplary contribution toward environment protection
The focus areas for TN Green Champion Award are environmental education, training, awareness, protection, research, and scientific studies for a new eco-restoration innovative Green product, sustainable development, solid waste management, water conservation, and water bodies protection, climate change adaptation & mitigation, emission reduction, control & recycling of plastic waste, eco-restoration, conservation measure, and coastal area protection, etc.
Mode of Selection
Awardees are selected by the District Level Award Committee (DLAC) comprising of the following
- District Collector – Chairman
- District Environment Engineer – Member Convener
- District Forest Officer
- 3 Representatives from local bodies (Corporation/Municipality/Town Panchayat/Rural Development)
- District Educational Officer
- Representative from 2 reputed Colleges
- Representatives from 2 NGOs
The selection process comprises the following
- Submission of application
- Shortlisting of the applicants
- Presentation before the District Collector
Ramco Cements was invited by the District Collector to make a presentation on 21.04.2022 along with other applicants. The committee after evaluating all the presentations selected Ramco Cements for the Green Champion Award. The award ceremony was held on the 6th June 2022 in connection with the World Environment Day Celebration at Ariyalur Collectorate. The District Collector Ms. P. Ramana Saraswathi, IAS gave away the award with a cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh. The award was received by Madhusudan Kulkarni, Unit Head, S. Ramaraj – SVP (Admin), and L. Bobby Pravin – AGM (Mgmt. Services) on behalf of Ramco Cements. Dr. M. Senthil Kumar District Environmental Engineer TNPCB was also present on the occasion.
