Wired systems to BLE technology in smart home lighting design
This interaction states the importance of lights in enhancing the space’s visual appeal and aesthetics that changes the landscape of modern lighting design.
What is your overarching philosophy or approach when creating lighting designs, it’s alignment with your personal or professional values?
It is crucial to achieve the ideal combination of function, form, and sustainability, similarly it is important to understand the client’s requirements, specify lighting parameters, then choose luminaires and drivers for the control system chosen. Because of LEDs’ digitising capabilities, it is feasible to create effective or more complex layers of light depending on the budget available. Our role is to work with the professional team; architects, interior designers and other consultants to produce a conceptual lighting design and the budget to start with. During the construction stage, we provide support, and technical assistance both onsite and remotely before finally progressing to a handover stage where the final finishing touches and programming complete the project achieving desired lighting effects and parameters as planned.
In terms of technology, which lighting innovations or tools do you find most exciting or impactful in your recent projects?
LEDs, Control & Lighting for Wellbeing! This is the concept that gives freedom to us designers and end users. Amidst all the available LEDs in the market today, we begin with selecting the right LEDs in terms of Colour Quality criteria followed by Luminaire Optics. Thereafter comes the play of Control with the right type of drivers – phase cut, wired or wireless, BLE, AI and so on – selected as per project requirement. We attempt to create visually stunning spaces that harness the subtle interplay between texture, form and colour while working with cutting-edge LED lighting technology. Our design deliverables are in the form of 2D and 3D lighting visualisation, renderings, and simulations created using various tools like Autodesk, Photoshop; and CALD (Dialux Evo) allowing for informed decision-making.
With the rapid evolution of smart home technology, how do you see it influencing the future of lighting design, and how do you adapt your approach to stay at the forefront of these advancements?
Having seen the evolution of smart home technology since 2002 when we designed Lighting with a prominent and renowned control system for a Bungalow at Napeancy Road, Mumbai. It was a 1 -10V wired system and halogen lamps working on 12V low-voltage transformers were used. For more than 15 years from then, we have used Lighting control of different brands with legacy lamps like GLS, Halogen, fluorescent and now LEDs with 1-10V, DALI, Di4 wired and Wireless systems. In short, we learn all new technologies and adapt them in our projects. Recently, we successfully designed and implemented a 4BHK residence LED Lighting with BLE (Bluetooth mesh technology) Wireless control.
