Lucknow International airport terminal project will make the region more self sustainable

It will also act as a catalyst to the economy, employment generation and other infrastructure developments and the tourism industry in the region near the Lucknow city

Scope of work

The objective was to ensure an integrated and comprehensive perspective for a sustained and cost-effective solution for the implementation and operation of the new integrated Passenger Terminal Building at C.C.S. International Airport, Lucknow. Egis is responsible for design, construction management and DLP. The scope includes participation of Egis in different stages which includes stages Inception, concept, schematic, detailed design, cost estimates stage, bid process management stage, bid evaluation and award, project management during construction phase and DLP. Total duration of project is 57 Months which involves 9 Months of design planning and rest for construction phase.

Challenges faced in the execution of this project

  • Planning for the phase wise construction without obstructing the international passenger movements in the airport during the construction of new Integrated international airport, and coordinating & integrating the existing external & internal services with the proposed ones was one challenge, moreover many parallel activities in planning, designing & detailing had to be planned to achieve the timelines and support the construction activities at the site.
  • The integration of many complex services in terms of their space requirements, technical parameters & specifications within the terminal had to be designed keeping in mind the scenario for 15-20 years
  • Change of management from AAI to Adani, led to other challenges of re-designing of the international terminal. Experience and level of service comfort, service requirements and spatial as well as structural requirements were revised. Segregation of service access with the passenger movements was mandated.
  • Planning for the sustainable terminal with the aim of getting a 4-star rating from GRIHA as also zero discharge planning and renewable source of energy within the limited budget for a project of this scale . Planning & detailing the external development scheme (elevated road, grade level roads, other infrastructure works) with the existing running facilities like terminal 1 &2, metro stations, adjacent villages approach etc was another challenge.

Innovative materials used for this project
The innovative materials and techniques used in this project include : zero discharge techniques, solar power energy, cavity wall construction for heat loss, high performance glass for the façade design, multi layered acoustic, low U- value aluminum roofing system to reduce the heat gain and to reduce the power consumption of the HVAC Load.

Benefits of the project post its completion
As an integrated airport terminal with all intercity/ interstate transports and connectivity networks like public transports, metro connectivity within the project site it is set to become a major hospitality hub as well. The land surrounding the airport has become a focal point for a range of economic activities that thrive on long-distance connectivity. It will also act as a catalyst to the economy, employment generation and other infrastructure developments and the tourism industry in the region near the Lucknow city, to make the region self-sustainable.
