Growth in construction industry

“Growth is picking up in the Indian construction industry mainly on account of government’s renewed focus on infrastructure development,” says Vivek Vanmeeganathan, Country Head and Managing Director, Caterpillar India.

The Indian government recently approved an outlay of Rs 6.92 trillion ($130 billion) for the construction of an 83,677 km road network over the next five years. The programme includes the Bharatmala scheme, under which 34,800 km of highways will be constructed at the cost of Rs 5.35 lakh crore (approximately $80 billion). This was later followed by an announcement of a plan by the Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal to invest over $150 billion in railways. In fact, India has made significant progress in developing its infrastructures in the last 2-3 years. India’s investment in infrastructure development is estimated to have risen to Rs 37 trillion ($ 570 billion) between 2013 and 2017. This marks a 56 per cent growth from Rs 24 trillion ($270 billion) spent in the preceding five years between 2008 and 2012. These investments will continue to drive growth in the Indian construction industry.

Technology is playing an important role in construction industry.
