Lucknow Income Tax Headquarters is redefining urban architecture

A green-certified government building that’s shaping Lucknow’s cityscape.

In the bustling heart of Luck  now, where history gracefully intertwines with the present and the urban landscape is constantly evolving, the IT Headquarters for the Lucknow government stands as a striking architectural landmark, embodying innovation and sustainability. Designed by the esteemed architectural firm STHAPATI, this government building challenges conventional design methods and redefines contemporary office buildings, setting a precedent for a greener cityscape.

Situated on an irregular plot, this structure is a complete pre-engineered steel marvel and a pioneer in India. The façade boasts unwavering lines, creating a visually captivating presence within the cityscape. True sustainability is ingrained in its response to the local context. Firstly, it meticulously follows the contours of its irregular site, minimising the negative impact on the environment. Secondly, the distinctive façade harmoniously integrates with the climate and the surroundings, aspiring to bring homogeneity to the existing landscape.

The project is a testament to engineering ingenuity, pioneering a centrally air-conditioned building concept with two basements, all supported by a pre-engineered steel structure. The columns and beams, manufactured off-site, were carefully erected in a phased and precise manner, resulting in significant time savings during construction. The Income Tax Headquarters proudly holds the prestigious GRIHA 4-star certification, showcasing its commitment to environmental design. During construction, measures were taken to protect existing trees and ensure dust mitigation, reinforcing the dedication to energy efficiency and pollution reduction.

Sustainability extends to material choices, ensuring durability and ease of maintenance. Stone finish high-pressure laminates grace the exterior facade, reducing the need for stone quarrying and preserving nature. Internally, innovative dry walls with gypsum and glass wool insulation replace conventional block and brick construction, enhancing precision and product quality.

The interior spaces are thoughtfully designed to provide functional and aesthetically pleasing workspaces, promoting productivity and comfort. Building services, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, are engineered precisely to optimise energy efficiency and occupant well-being. The landscape design adds to the charm, creating a green oasis within the city, seamlessly blending with the architectural beauty.

The Income Tax Headquarters symbolises progress in architecture, a beacon of sustainability, and a blueprint for future government projects. This urban oasis, where function meets aesthetics and tradition meets innovation, sets a new standard for contemporary urban architecture in India, marking a milestone in the nation’s architectural landscape. Its bold and innovative design profoundly impacts the dense urban fabric, redefining the architectural narrative.
