Shareef House exemplifies architecture and embraces tradition

In contrast to the prevailing modern structures surrounding it, the house defies convention by reaching outwards, embracing the outside world.

Nestled within the heart of Gudiyatham, a town in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district, the Shareef House stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and community engagement. Designed by Ds2 Architecture, this residence transcends the ordinary by seamlessly blending local climate responsiveness, traditional values, and a deep sense of philanthropy.

The Shareef House, situated centrally between Bangalore and Chennai, embodies a distinctive architectural vision. In contrast to the prevailing modern structures surrounding it, the house defies convention by reaching outwards, embracing the outside world. This gesture, rooted in the client’s love for his neighbourhood and his commitment to philanthropy, challenges the conventional notion of insularity in residential design.

Gudiyatham’s hot and dry climate and seasonal monsoon showers posed a unique challenge for the architects. The 440 sq.m site, sandwiched between linear plots, demanded a strategic approach. The architectural response was a linear form with multiple courtyards catering to the demands of the environment and the client’s lifestyle.

The heart of the Shareef House lies in its duality. Divided into two distinct parts, the house reflects the client’s Islamic traditions and dedication to community service. The anterior, occupying one-third of the structure, is a public space fostering neighbourhood interaction. Symbolised by exposed concrete, this domain embodies family strength and timeless values. The concrete’s monolithic appearance mirrors the unwavering commitment to these principles.

In contrast, the private two-thirds of the house is a sanctuary for the family, cocooned by thick exposed brick walls that offer thermal comfort. The interiors radiate warmth with white walls, beige marble, and inviting wood accents. This transition from the exterior’s robust statement to the interior’s softer embrace reflects the harmonious interplay of tradition and modernity within the architectural narrative.

At the core of the Shareef House project lies the client’s profound sense of philanthropy. A third-generation resident of the locality, he transcends geographical boundaries with his international business interests, particularly in Saudi Arabia. Rooted in Islamic tradition, he exemplifies how architecture can foster community bonds and promote charitable endeavours.
